Echinacea is true immune-boosting herb that has become such a staple it has managed to work its way into the mainstream vernacular - especially during cold and flu season. Echinacea purpurea, more commonly known as the purple coneflower plant, is a plant that is native to the USA, and was a commonly used by Native American tribes to treat common ailments (incidentally, that's not the flower pictured in the photo - that's a calendula flower. I just used it for color). All parts of the echinacea plant can be used medicinally, although perhaps most commonly the flower and leaves are used commercially. This tincture is created form the leaves, roots, and stem.
The dried echinacea plant parts are soaked in a 70 proof clear alcohol for a minimum of 6 weeks in order to extract the most benefit from the herb. Alcohol extraction is one of the most effective ways to reap the most benefit from an herb, so you may find that you need very little of this tincture to be effective. Because this tincture is alcohol-based, if stored in the airtight dropper jar, it will last for years, so you have ample time to use your tincture without worrying about it going to waste.
The most common uses for echinacea are as follows:
- to shorten the duration of a cold or other common viral illness
- to help prevent or minimize cold or viral illness (like flu) symptoms at the onset
- help to prevent recurrent yeast infections
- to help prevent recurrent urinary tract infections
- to help to shorten the duration of mouth sores caused by viral illness (tincture formulation only)
The standard adult dose of echinacea tincture is between .75 and 2 ml daily (about 1 to 2 standard droppers full).
It goes without saying that if you are receiving treatment of any kind or taking medications, please check with your healthcare provider before taking any herbal teas or supplements. **With echinacea in particular, you want to exercise caution if you have an existing autoimmune disease, due to the immune-boosting properties of the herb.
