Summer of 2015 in Vancouver Island! Families heading to Vancouver for a summer vacation have their own different itineraries adapted by family size, time spent and budget. But for us, the itinerary was a family on a tight budget and a tight schedule, loving to spend time close to nature and follow locally places to eat.
Day 01/02: Depart Horseshoe Bay on BC Ferries to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island for about 01 hour. We camped at the Living Forest Oceanside Campground on site T22 Riverview Tent. Great private spot surrounded by large mature trees. Enjoyed a bike ride to Nanaimo and a tasty Nanaimo bar at the Perkins Coffee Co.
Day 03/04: Took a ferry to Gabriola Island and tented at the Descanso Bay Regional Park Campground. Located just a short distance from the ferry terminal. Gabriola Island is a small, quiet and secluded island with many little cute shops and cafes. We loved the food at the Mad Ronas so much we had to go back for breakfast and lunch twice!
Day 05/06: A visit to one of Canada's most popular summer destinations, Parksville & Qualicum Beach. We managed to tent at the Rathrevor Beach Provincial Park Campground on Rathrevor Beach. Our family spent countless hours at the wide sandy beach looking for sand dollars and empty shells. Amazing variety of little marine creatures living under the sand. The Lefty's Restaurant had a good family friendly menu with delicious baking options.
Day 07/08: Moved toward the Pacific Rim side of Vancouver Island and because of the rainy and wet days we stayed at the Island Village Properties at North Chesterman's Beach during the first couple days.
